An experienced staff will help with advice and coaching after the dog has gone home. Each adopted dog is spayed or neutered before leaving the Kennel. Puppies are scheduled to return at 5 months for altering. The County's very modest adoption fee includes:
- Dog license
- An adoption kit with specially prepared training literature
- Initial vaccines
- Spay/neuter,
- Dog food
- Free obedience lecture
We participate in many projects in an attempt to place as many dogs as possible, including weekly television showings and "on site" promotions.

Here is how we help reunite dogs and their people:
- We maintain a bulletin board where notices of lost and found dogs are placed and checked daily by our staff.
- Notices in the daily newspaper are monitored and a special flyer with detailed information is given to each visitor looking for their missing companion.
- A daily log is kept of each incoming dog with includes a description of the dog and the location found.
- To assist with the very large number of calls, a computerized list is updated daily with details on every dog housed in our kennel.

Thousands of dogs are received by the Cuyahoga County Kennel each year. Our Kennel staff works with each new arrival in the following way:
- Each dog is given a preliminary medical check and vaccinated for distemper, hepatitis, leptospiras, parainfluenza, parvovirus, and, if indicated, wormed.
- Then, each animal is evaluated for adoptability, taking into consideration the health, age, and temperament of the dog.
- A stray must be held for 72 hours prior to adoption, under Ohio Law. During this holding period we interview candidates (people) who are interested in adopting the animal when he or she is available. The time periods are:
- 14 days for dogs with current licenses
- 7 days for dogs with other forms of identification.
- During the holding periods, every effort is made to locate the owners of the dogs, including a certified letter to the owner of record for dogs with current licenses.
About Our Care & Lodging
Dogs continuously receive fresh water, quality food and medications when necessary. The large and spacious cages are cleaned and disinfected throughout the day. More active and larger dogs are exercised out of doors. Volunteers bathe and groom the dogs during their stay.
Although many dogs are very fearful and nervous about their new surrounding at first, within a day or two of our special care, we usually see wagging tails and enthusiastic greetings for each Kennel visitor.

Deputies are trained to handle each dog in the most humane way possible. Dogs receive prompt medical emergency treatment, whether by the County veterinarian at the Kennel or at the nearest emergency clinic. Sick, injured, or aggressive stray dogs are housed separately from the rest of the Kennel population. These animals are continuously monitored by an experienced medical team.

The County requires all adopted dogs be spayed or neutered. A special surgical cage area ensures each animal is comfortable and quiet while recuperating from this procedure.
Every year millions of healthy, loving animals are euthanized for lack of homes. An altered pet is healthier, happier, and will live much longer. There is no good excuse for not altering your pet. Low income assistance programs are available through:

- Friends of Animals (after 1:00 PM) 587-0476
